2nd & Main Route 66 Fence Mural

About

Created as a community art project during the 2024 Ottawa County Arts Festival, the Miami Community Mural brings together colorful symbols of Oklahoma, Route 66 and the communities that make up northeastern Oklahoma. The long mural features a patchwork of imagery including Route 66 shields, state symbols, Native-inspired imagery, agricultural scenes, a covered wagon, sunflower, monarch butterfly and other references to the region.

Rather than presenting a single scene, the mural unfolds as a collection of individual panels, giving it the feel of a community scrapbook painted across downtown Miami. Local artist and longtime Miami public-art advocate Jessica Stout served as an assistant facilitator for the project during the 2024 festival.

Its downtown location also places the mural directly within Miami's larger public-art story. The city has developed an unusually rich collection of murals through Miami Mural Fest 66 and its successor, the Ottawa County Arts Festival, turning buildings, walls and unexpected surfaces throughout the community into stops worth discovering along Route 66.
