About

The Chambless General Store is one of the most evocative surviving remnants of Route 66 in the Mojave Desert. Founded in 1932 by James Albert Chambless and his wife, Fannie, the remote roadside stop became an essential oasis for travelers crossing one of the harshest stretches of the Mother Road.

The Chambless family developed a small complex that included a grocery store, café, service station and tourist cabins, providing fuel, food, water and a place to rest. Fannie even created a rose garden and fish pond in the middle of the desert, and during World War II she became known for serving fresh lemonade to soldiers training nearby at General George S. Patton’s Desert Training Center.

The store once featured a broad wooden canopy that shaded travelers and their cars from the intense desert sun. Route 66 traffic declined sharply after Interstate 40 bypassed the area in the 1970s, and the business eventually closed.

Today, the weathered building and faded CHAMBLESS sign remain beside old Route 66, preserving the look and feel of a time when isolated roadside businesses could mean the difference between a difficult desert crossing and a welcome place to stop.
