About
The Gemini Giant has been welcoming Route 66 travelers since 1965. Originally installed outside Wilmington's Launching Pad restaurant, this towering fiberglass astronaut became a celebrated roadside attraction. Restaurant owners John and Bernice Korelc purchased a commercial Muffler Man statue for approximately $3,500. They transformed it into a space-themed landmark inspired by America's fascination with space exploration. A local school naming contest gave the astronaut his distinctive name, referencing NASA's Gemini program. Dressed in a metallic green spacesuit, silver helmet, and matching boots, the Giant holds a silver rocket across his arms. His unusual appearance helped establish him as an enduring symbol of Route 66's roadside culture.
Following the permanent closure of the Launching Pad, the Gemini Giant faced an uncertain future. In March 2024, the Joliet Area Historical Museum acquired the statue for $275,000 using state grant funding. The historic figure underwent restoration before returning to Wilmington later that year. On November 30, 2024, the restored Gemini Giant celebrated his homecoming at South Island Park. His new location preserves his connection to the community while providing visitors with another Route 66 photo opportunity. Today, travelers can admire the towering astronaut and explore the nearby Landing Pad souvenir shop.
