About
We welcome travelers to one of Arizona's wonderfully preserved slices of Route 66 roadside history. Our building began serving motorists in 1934 as the Northside Grocery and an adjoining Conoco station, remaining in business until Interstate 40 bypassed this stretch of the Mother Road in 1978. After sitting vacant for years, Route 66 artist and cartographer Bob Waldmire revived the property in 1992 as a souvenir shop and traveler information stop, deliberately preserving much of its weathered character. The store later passed to John and Kerry Pritchard in 1998 and to Amy Franklin in 2016, continuing a tradition of keeping Hackberry's roadside story alive rather than polishing away its history.
Today, we surround visitors with the sights and textures of the Mother Road: vintage gas pumps, old automobiles, faded advertising signs, license plates, automotive memorabilia and an interior packed with Route 66 souvenirs and artifacts. Travelers can explore the property, photograph its collection of roadside relics and browse for shirts, signs, books, postcards, magnets and other Route 66 keepsakes. It remains as much a living roadside time capsule as a working gift shop, giving travelers a glimpse of the small independent businesses that once punctuated the highway across the Southwest.
