About

The John Osterman Gas Station is a surviving piece of Route 66 history in the heart of Peach Springs. Built in 1929 as automobile traffic along the newly designated highway was growing, the concrete-block Shell station served motorists with fuel and repair services and became part of everyday life in the community. It was one of five gas stations operating in Peach Springs during Route 66’s heyday and is the only one of those historic stations still standing. Its large garage, service canopy and concrete-block construction reflect the practical roadside businesses that once appeared throughout the Mother Road.

The Hualapai Tribe purchased the property in 2005 with the goal of preserving it, and the station was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. After years of deterioration—and a 2021 microburst that tore away its roof—the Tribe and preservation partners carried out major stabilization and exterior restoration work. By March 2026, the roof had been stabilized and the restored exterior was preparing for the property's next phase, while the Hualapai Tribe and ADOT continued planning for its future adaptive reuse. For travelers today, the station remains an important roadside landmark that connects Route 66’s automobile era with the history and ongoing story of Peach Springs and the Hualapai community.
