About
Located along historic Route 66 in downtown Miami, the Miami Gateway 66 Heritage Mural celebrates the people, places and roadside history that shaped this northeastern Oklahoma community. The colorful collage incorporates the iconic Route 66 shield, the Coleman Theatre, classic automobiles and other imagery tied to Miami’s heritage and its identity as the “Gateway into Oklahoma” for Mother Road travelers. Miami’s Main Street follows historic Route 66 and has long served as one of the first major Oklahoma stops for travelers arriving from Kansas.
Beside the colorful Route 66 collage, a second painted panel depicts Miami’s historic Ottawa County gateway, incorporating references to Oklahoma statehood in 1907, Miami’s founding in 1891, and the nearby nine-foot-wide Ribbon Road. Together, the artwork connects Miami’s local history with more than a century of transportation and travel through the region.
