About Us
Rockwood Motor Court opened in 1929 when Springfield entrepreneur Deverne Ruckman established a tourist camp along the newly designated Route 66. Originally situated on Springfield's western outskirts, the property featured six guest cottages, a family residence, a Shell filling station, a café, and a garage. Its convenient accommodations attracted motorists traveling America's expanding highway system. In 1948, the property officially became Rockwood Motor Court. Around this period, the cottages received distinctive Ozark sandstone masonry, red brick trim, and other architectural improvements. The stonework created a recognizable appearance that contributed to the property's identity. Despite declining traffic following the development of the Interstate Highway System, Rockwood survived while numerous other historic motor courts disappeared.
An extensive restoration beginning in 2019 revitalized Rockwood Motor Court while preserving its historic character. Its original cottages now offer individually themed accommodations celebrating different eras of American travel. Vintage furniture, historical memorabilia, and modern amenities create an authentic overnight Route 66 experience. Restoration work also transformed the original Shell filling station into a guestroom named Fill 'Er Up, decorated with vintage gasoline memorabilia. Visitors can enjoy the landscaped courtyard, admire historic architecture, and exchange stories with fellow travelers. In 2025, Rockwood joined Historic Hotels of America, recognizing its continuing contribution to American roadside heritage. Today, the property offers travelers an opportunity to experience the accommodations and atmosphere of Route 66's early years.
