About
Hidden beneath historic Route 66 in Chelsea, Oklahoma, the Chelsea Route 66 Pedestrian Underpass is one of the few remaining pedestrian tunnels built along the Mother Road and is believed to be the only publicly accessible example on Oklahoma's stretch of Route 66. Originally constructed to provide a safe way for residents to cross the busy highway, the tunnel served the community for decades before being transformed into a unique Route 66 attraction.
In 2016, the underpass was cleaned, restored, and enhanced with colorful murals by Oklahoma artist Kenneth Hollingshead. The artwork celebrates Chelsea's rich history, featuring scenes and landmarks that tell the story of the town while honoring the enduring legacy of Route 66. Today, visitors can literally "Get Their Kicks Under Route 66" as they walk through this one-of-a-kind landmark.
