About

The Stout Texaco Gas Station is a restored reminder of the small filling stations that once served motorists crossing Needles on Route 66. Bea and Harold Stout operated the station during the highway’s busy midcentury years, when its compact office, single service bay and flat canopy offered travelers a straightforward place to refuel and tend to their cars in the Mojave Desert. Period photographs document the Texaco during the 1950s, and historical Route 66 research places it along the western stretch of Broadway near the turn onto Needles Highway. The station later operated as a Mobil before closing in the 1970s.

Its restored white exterior, Texaco lettering and period-style details now preserve the look of an everyday roadside business from Route 66’s automobile era. Unlike the larger motels and neon attractions that competed for travelers’ attention, the station represents the smaller service stops that were once essential parts of a cross-country drive. Today it remains an easy roadside photo opportunity and a surviving piece of the commercial landscape that developed around Route 66 in Needles.
