About
The U-Drop Inn Cafe and adjoining Tower Station opened in 1936 along Route 66 in Shamrock, Texas. J. M. Tindall and R. C. Lewis financed the distinctive complex, while architect J. C. Berry developed its dramatic Art Deco design. The western section operated as the Tower Conoco Station, while the eastern portion housed the U-Drop Inn Cafe. Its name reportedly came from a local schoolboy’s winning entry in a naming contest.
The building became one of Route 66’s most recognizable Texas landmarks, distinguished by glazed tile walls, geometric ornamentation, neon accents, and two soaring towers. After decades of decline, the City of Shamrock acquired and restored the property, reopening it as a visitor center, museum, gift shop, Chamber of Commerce office, and community landmark. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997 and later gained additional recognition after inspiring the visual design of Ramone’s automotive shop in Pixar’s Cars.
