About

Slug Bug Ranch began in 2002 near Conway, Texas, as the Crutchfield family’s playful answer to Cadillac Ranch. The roadside installation featured half-buried Volkswagen Beetles positioned nose-down in the Texas soil, where travelers gradually covered them with layers of colorful graffiti. Although the associated business closed soon afterward, the Beetles remained and developed into an interactive Route 66-style attraction where visitors could leave their own painted marks.

In 2024, Slug Bug Ranch relocated to Amarillo near Interstate 40 and the Big Texan RV Ranch. The expanded site combines the familiar Volkswagen Beetles with additional half-buried vehicles, including retired Big Texan stretch limousines. Visitors are encouraged to bring spray paint, explore the artwork, and photograph the continually changing display. Concrete walkways and an accessible layout make the attraction easy to explore while preserving its quirky roadside character.
