About Us
We have welcomed Route 66 travelers to Wigwam Village #6 since Chester E. Lewis opened the motel in 1950. After seeing Frank Redford's Wigwam Village in Cave City, Kentucky, Lewis obtained permission to use Redford's patented design and brought the concept to Holbrook. Fifteen concrete-and-steel, teepee-shaped guest rooms were arranged around the property, creating one of the Mother Road's most recognizable motor courts. Interstate 40's bypass of Holbrook eventually reduced traffic, and the motel closed for a period before our Lewis family repurchased the property and reopened it in 1988. In 2002, Wigwam Village #6 was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
Today, we continue to preserve the character that generations of travelers remember, including original-style furnishings and a collection of vintage automobiles displayed around the property. Guests can still spend the night inside one of the distinctive sleeping units, while modern additions such as air conditioning, television and Wi-Fi provide a few present-day comforts without changing the motel's basic historic character. The Wigwam Motel remains family operated and offers travelers the unusual opportunity to do more than photograph a surviving Route 66 landmark—they can actually sleep in one.
