About

Road Runner’s Retreat is a classic mid-century Route 66 stop standing alone in the Mojave Desert along National Trails Highway. Opened in the early 1960s, it once offered travelers fuel, food and a welcome break between long stretches of desert highway. The business eventually closed and a fire badly damaged the diner’s interior, but the weathered buildings, gas station canopy and unmistakable roadside sign remain.

On November 8, 2025, that famous sign came back to life when its neon was illuminated for the first time since 1974. The restoration included recreating the roadrunner’s long-missing head and restoring the animated neon legs that make the bird appear to run. The sign is currently illuminated only for special events, but Road Runner’s Retreat remains an authentic piece of Route 66 being preserved right where its story began.
